How to Pick Weightlifting Meet Attempts

Attempt selection is one of the most important factors in competition performance. Conservative openers (88-93% of training max) put you on the board and build momentum. Second attempts (93-98%) secure a strong total. Third attempts (97-103%) are for PRs and big jumps. Adjust percentages based on experience: first-time competitors should be more conservative, while seasoned athletes can push harder.

All attempts are rounded to the nearest 2.5kg since competition plates come in 2.5kg and 1.25kg increments. Your training max should be the best lift you have hit in the last 2-3 weeks of training, not an all-time PR from months ago. Competition day performance typically falls within 95-102% of recent training maxes.
