How BJJ Belt Progression Works
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uses a five-belt system: white, blue, purple, brown, and black. Each belt can have up to four stripes indicating progress within that rank. The IBJJF sets minimum time-in-grade requirements, but actual promotion timelines vary based on training frequency, competition results, and instructor assessment.
Training 3-4 times per week is considered standard. More frequent training and active competition can accelerate progression. Most practitioners reach black belt in 8-12 years of consistent training. This calculator provides estimates based on typical progression rates and adjusts for your specific training habits and competition experience.
