US Navy Body Fat Calculator for Fighters
The US Navy body fat method estimates your body composition from simple circumference measurements — neck, waist, and hips (for women). It was developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center and is widely used in military fitness assessments. While not as precise as DEXA or hydrostatic weighing, the Navy method is free, requires no equipment, and correlates well with more expensive techniques within 3-4% accuracy for most people.
For combat athletes, body fat percentage matters more than scale weight. Two fighters at 185 lbs can perform very differently if one carries 12% body fat and the other carries 22%. Lower body fat generally means better power-to-weight ratio, faster movement, and an easier weight cut. Most competitive male fighters sit between 8-15% body fat, while female fighters typically compete at 14-22%.
