Understanding Climbing Grade Systems
Climbing grades vary by region and discipline. The Yosemite Decimal System (YDS) is standard in North America for sport and trad climbing, while the French system dominates in Europe. The UIAA scale is used across Central Europe and in alpine contexts. For bouldering, the V-Scale (Hueco) is the North American standard, while the Fontainebleau (Font) system is preferred in Europe. Conversions are approximate since each system was developed independently and grade perception varies by crag and style.
