Understanding Pre-Fight Anxiety

Pre-competition anxiety is completely normal and affects fighters at every level, from amateurs to UFC champions. A moderate level of arousal actually improves performance by sharpening focus and reaction time. The problem arises when anxiety becomes overwhelming, leading to poor sleep, loss of appetite, and an inability to execute your game plan.

Box breathing (inhale 4 seconds, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4) activates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowering heart rate and cortisol. Used by Navy SEALs and elite athletes, it can be practiced anywhere from the locker room to the walkout tunnel. Pair breathing with visualization of successful techniques for the best results.
