Understanding Reach in Boxing and MMA
Reach measures the distance from fingertip to fingertip with arms extended horizontally. In combat sports, reach advantage lets a fighter land punches from a distance where their opponent cannot reach them. The ape index (reach minus height) shows whether your arms are proportionally long for your frame. A positive ape index means longer arms relative to height, which is generally advantageous in striking. Fighters like Jon Jones (+10.5 inches) and Conor McGregor (+3 inches) have used their reach advantage as a core part of their game. This calculator compares both fighters and provides tactical adjustments based on who holds the advantage and by how much.
