Why Standard BMI Doesn't Work for Athletes

Body Mass Index (BMI) divides your weight by height squared to produce a single number. It was designed for population-level health screening, not for individual athletes. A muscular MMA fighter at 5'10" and 200 lbs has a BMI of 28.7 — technically "overweight" — despite being in exceptional shape. This is because BMI cannot distinguish between muscle and fat. For combat athletes, BMI is best used as a rough reference alongside body fat percentage and sport-specific weight class targets.

Elite combat sport athletes typically carry more lean mass than the general population. Their BMIs cluster higher than the "normal" 18.5–25 range without any health penalty. This calculator shows you where you fall relative to athletes in your sport, not just the general population chart designed for sedentary adults.
