Choosing the Right Weight Class for Competition

Competing at the right weight class balances size advantage against the performance cost of cutting. A safe weight cut is generally under 8% of your body weight, with most of the final cut coming from water manipulation in the last 24-48 hours. Same-day weigh-ins (common in wrestling and some BJJ tournaments) limit how much you can safely cut since recovery time is minimal. Day-before weigh-ins (MMA, boxing, judo) allow more aggressive cuts with proper rehydration. Body fat percentage matters because athletes below 10% have less margin for diet-based cutting and rely more on water weight.
