What Is VO2 Max and Why It Matters for Fighters

VO2 max measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise, expressed in milliliters per kilogram per minute (ml/kg/min). It is the gold standard for aerobic fitness and directly correlates with endurance performance in combat sports.

Elite boxers typically have VO2 max values between 55-65 ml/kg/min, while MMA fighters range from 50-60. Higher VO2 max means faster recovery between rounds, better sustained output during exchanges, and the ability to maintain technique under fatigue. This calculator uses three validated field tests so you can estimate your VO2 max without expensive lab equipment.

The Cooper 12-minute run test is the most widely used and requires only a track or measured course. The Rockport walk test is suitable for beginners or those recovering from injury. The McArdle step test provides a quick estimate using only a bench and heart rate monitor.
