CrossFit Timer Modes
AMRAP (As Many Rounds As Possible) tests sustained output under a time cap — track rounds and reps to benchmark progress. EMOM (Every Minute On the Minute) builds pacing discipline by starting work at the top of each minute with the remainder as rest. Tabata follows the original Izumi Tabata protocol: 20 seconds of all-out effort followed by 10 seconds of rest for 8 rounds, proven to improve both aerobic and anaerobic capacity. For Time is a classic race-the-clock format where you complete the prescribed work as fast as possible.
These timer formats translate directly to combat sports conditioning. A 5-minute AMRAP mirrors an MMA round, Tabata intervals build the explosive recovery needed for scrambles and exchanges, and EMOM pacing teaches fighters to manage energy output — a skill that separates amateurs from professionals in later rounds.
